How much is too much?
Consider the following when deciding on an RV Generator:
- The first thing to consider is how much power you're likely to use. Add up the maximum watt rating for all the components and you'll have a good idea of what to look for. Wattage ratings are printed on light bulbs, while other devices like hair dryers and electric heaters are also described by their wattage requirements.
- Consider noise levels when choosing an RV generator. Sure having enough juice to power a city block is great, but realize that generators with industrial power ratings aren't made for quiet usage.
- Will you be able to refill the fuel tank of the generator? Choose an engine with the right type of fuel to give you the economy you need. After all, what good is a power generator if you can't keep the generator powered?
- The two most common fuel types are liquid propane and diesel. Diesel engines cost more initially, but are more fuel-efficient and cost less to fill.
- Liquid propane engines, however, burn cleaner and quieter and are generally smaller than diesel engines.

One tip that should be considered, especially long trips, is to use the RV generator to power the roof air conditioner while you drive.
The generator will use much less fuel than the vehicle's engine so by using the portable power to run the air in the main compartment, your vehicle's fuel economy will be improved. Also, any other appliances can be run while driving!
Tips to keep your generator running clean
To keep your RV generator running at its best, make sure you let it warm up and exercise it regularly.
A generator should be allowed to warm up by running it for at least 20 minutes. Once warmed up, running the generator in five minute intervals will keep it running smooth.
Be sure not to run it with a power load on it, however, as running an RV generator with no load for more than 30 minutes can put stress on the components and lead to unnecessary repair costs.
